Why are there so many flags out all over town?
Our country celebrates Veterans Day this Wednesday, November 11th. The flags go up in honor of every member of the United States Armed Forces who has served our country. The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day and started in 1919, one year after World War One ended. In 1954 it was officially renamed to recognize all of our military veterans.
The Rotary Clubs in Denton place over 2,800 flags at area homes and businesses in recognition of the patriotic holidays throughout the year. The $45 annual subscription gets your flag delivered on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Patriots Day (September 11th), and Veterans Day. The flag is picked up after each occasion, stored and maintained so you never have to worry that it is tattered or faded.
The funds raised go directly back into our community through partnerships with the food banks, the schools, scholarships, literacy programs, homeless initiatives, youth services and many others. They also go to our international projects including eradicating polio, sheltering disaster victims, delivering packaged meals to Central America and drilling water wells in Africa. And Rotarians are People of Action that aren’t just writing checks but are hands-on involved with their projects as well.
So when you see Old Glory flying in our fall breeze this week realize that this person or business is displaying the stars and stripes to honor our military veterans. But at the same time they are helping out people in need through their contribution to the Rotary Club.
